I’d been thinking about the idea of the family unit, specifically the nuclear family, and how the dynamics between mother, father, and children may be perceived. We see the family unit moving towards their future, accompanied by some ancestral effigies, in essence being guided by their past to inform the future. The parental figures are leading this procession, with the children in tow, being led and protected.
I was interested in creating synergies between various parts of the figures to show their connection as a family unit. The positioning of their hands and bodies creates connections between all of them.
I didn’t want to put the father in front of the mother in this piece. It’s not to diminish the father’s role, but to show them in equal standing, going back to this egalitarian and equitable dynamic I’ve been thinking about since the Emiomo presentation.
